Dear Citizens
As the year comes to a close, we take this opportunity to reflect on the past twelve months, which have been marked by significant milestones, including Monique Hermes’s appointment as the first female mayor of Grevenmacher.
This change brought fresh energy to the municipal council. We, the DP-Grevenmacher, are pleased that, as an opposition party, we are now more actively involved in the municipality’s ongoing projects. The mayor has well-received our proposals, which have been directly integrated into the initiatives.
This positive dynamic allows our council members—Claude Wagner, Patrick Frieden, and Claire Sertznig—to continue their constructive efforts. Our goal remains steadfast: fostering Grevenmacher’s progressive development and long-term success!
Key Projects and Decisions Supported or Proposed by DP Maacher
- Cultural Center Machera—Thanks to DP Maacher’s intervention, the Cultural Center has adopted its current design, which includes an underground parking facility that was not part of the original project.
- Parking Spaces at Réngmauer and Centre – Following DP Maacher’s input, all residents without a garage or private parking space can now rent a parking spot, eliminating the initial limitation that excluded potential users near the zone’s border.
- Improved Communication on Traffic Regulations – DP Maacher advocated for better communication about traffic regulations through the municipality’s social media channels.
- Redesign of the Market Square (Moartplaz) – DP Maacher proposed transforming the square into a pedestrian-friendly meeting area with a one-way traffic lane, giving priority to pedestrians and limiting vehicle speed to 20 km/h. Flexible measures, such as reversing the entry and exit points of the Réngmauer parking, were introduced to enhance traffic calming and promote a vibrant community space.
Key Projects and Decisions Opposed by DP Maacher
- Additional Loan of €15 Million – We do not find this level of borrowing necessary at present.
- New Waste Disposal Fee Regulation—Contrary to the municipal board’s initial promises, there was no preparatory workshop with the council to review the latest household waste data before the vote. DP Maacher opposes both the pricing model and the lack of transparent preparation. We favor a solution based on the “polluter pays” principle.
- New Bus Station at Cultural Center Machera – The extravagant and overpriced design could have been replaced with a simpler, more cost-effective, and sustainable option.
- Redesign of Flohr Sports Infrastructure Parking – Spending nearly half a million euros on this project to add only ten additional parking spaces fails to address the broader parking challenges during sports events. DP Maacher calls for a comprehensive and solutions-oriented approach.
Critical Review of 17 Months Under CSV/Déi Gréng Leadership
A key promise in the July 2023 coalition agreement was “transparent policymaking through dialogue with citizens.” However, this transparency has often fallen short.
For example, DP Maacher’s proposal to record or livestream council meetings—allowing citizens to follow debates and votes—was dismissed as “not a priority” by the coalition. Yet, this modern and transparent approach has proven effective in many municipalities, strengthening citizen engagement – regrettably, the majority parties in Grevenmacher missed this opportunity.
Other Projects Lacking Priority So Far:
- A much-needed new building for the municipality’s technical services still needs to be addressed.
- The traffic situation on Potaschberg continues to worsen, placing increasing pressure on Rue Kummert and Route du Vin. Despite its impact on residents’ quality of life, no feasibility studies or solutions appear to have been initiated.
- Enhancing the pedestrian zone’s appeal is another neglected area. While the coalition mentioned “promoting municipal pop-up stores” to revitalize the area, no notable progress has been made.
These initiatives represent valuable steps toward a forward-thinking community. However, clear concepts and action plans are still missing. DP Maacher will continue to advocate for their implementation.
