We had the great pleasure of holding a well-attended conference with the Minister of Finance, Yuriko Backes, on January 30. There was a very dynamic and open exchange of questions and positions between the Minister and members and sympathizers of DP International on some issues that were and still are of great importance in this first year in office of Mrs. Backes.
A year full of challenges
On January 5, 2022, Yuriko Backes became the first woman in Luxembourg’s history to take office as Minister of Finance, replacing Pierre Gramegna, who had held the post since 2013.
Right at the start, the minister had to deal with the ongoing consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
When the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, other problems emerged. In addition to the inhumane suffering of the Ukrainian population and foreign policy security concerns, especially for the European continent, this war also brought increased economic problems. These consequences quickly made themselves felt in the lives of the Luxembourg population, which saw its purchasing power shrink as inflation rose and energy and other products became more expensive.
A responsible policy that provides answers
To counteract these impacts, the tireless work of Finance Minister Backes and the entire government, led by Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, was of great importance, as they were able to take measures to mitigate these impacts through negotiations with the social partners.
More information on this can be found in English on the DP page:
Other topics of the evening were also the budget for 2023, once again marked by a large investment in social, sustainable and forward-looking measures and finally the recently announced relief measures a conference topic on which more information will follow in the coming weeks.
We thank Yuriko for the open exchange and the very pleasant evening! đź’™
